He started training in laparoscopic surgery in 1990 spending a year in Paris, France after he was awarded a traveling scholarship by the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Martin started training in laparoscopic bariatric surgery in 1995 traveling to Europe again and then being mentored at his practice in New Orleans by surgical pioneers from Belgium, Italy and Australia.LSU sponsored training programs for international surgeons to learn how to laparoscopically place adjustable gastric bands from 1996 to 2000. Dr. Martin moved from New Orleans, Louisiana to Moses Lake in 2007 after hurricane Katrina flooded the hospital, medical school and clinic.

Dr. Martin chose to specialize in bariatric surgery “because I love to contribute to the transformation in patients’ lives when they lose 100 pounds or more after surgery. These people watch most of their medical problems resolve. They get back energy, the ability to move again and, most important, their lives. It is such a privilege to participate in this change, and I experience vicarious pleasure watching patients start to enjoy life again. Nothing in medicine that I have done has given me as much pleasure.”

Dr. Martin completed both college and medical school at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He started his training at the University of Washington in Seattle under Dr. Robert Petersdorf and then Dr. James Carrico. He then finished his general surgery residency and fellowship training at the University of Louisville in Kentucky with Dr. Hiram Polk. He has been in practice for over 25 years.
